Korumburra Community Access Centre

A Triumph from Tragedy

If you were told you were high up on the list of disadvantaged people, how would you react?  With  resignation?  Defeat?  Or would it make you determined to do something to change the situation?

This was the challenge that faced our town after a Jesuit Report in 1998 listed it as one of Victoria’s most disadvantaged towns.  Korumburra would not take it lying down.

The Gippsland Local Government Network (GLGN) instigated a Community Building Program targeting three towns, including Korumburra.  The aim was to facilitate community meetings to ascertain ways of invigorating the towns. In 2000-2001, a series of public forums and workshops were held in Korumburra over a twelve-month period. From the myriad of suggestions, priority projects were eventually identified.

A town committee was formed and Korumburra Community Development and Action Inc. (KCDA Inc) was born. It undertook to address the top five projects on the wish list, and Working Parties were nominated.

A Drop-In Centre would meet many of the identified needs.  A casual meeting place first and foremost, it would foster a sense of belonging for the lonely, with a warm welcome guaranteed.  It could be a place for small groups to hold meetings; be an outlet for local arts and crafts; and a centre for information on community activities.

A co-ordinator was engaged in August 2003 as a facilitator for the project and a liaison between the Shire and the working party. The disused Women’s Comfort Station, originally built in the 1940s, was restored and refurbished with the help of the South Gippsland Shire. The Grand Opening of The Korumburra Community Access Centre took place on 31st January, 2004: the culmination of much hard work by all concerned.

As well as meeting all the identified needs, it now provides Internet access, a home for KDCA Inc., The Burra Flyer, and gives positive volunteering opportunities. A monthly Mini-Market held from September to May, adds life and interest to the town.

A good outcome from a dire report.
